Fire Mitigation is the process of removing smaller undergrowth and allowing proper distance between clumps of trees to slow the spread of fire. We also remove ladder fuels to keep the fire from spreading from tree to tree. This, in return, makes for a healthier forest and allows your
mature trees to continue to thrive and the wildlife to return and flourish as well.
Similar to fire mitigation, Tree Mitigation focuses more on dead trees that are making your property an eye sore. We also focus on hazardous trees that may be to close to the house or out buildings that pose a threat to the structure if it were to fall in high winds or lightning strikes. With J&K's Professional Tree Services, we ensure the job gets done right.

The goal of a mitigated property is to create proper Defensible Space, which is the natural and/or landscaped area surrounding a structure that is improved to decrease fire risk. Create a 15-foot separation between the structure and vegetation to prevent fire from spreading to the structure
We've got a trunk of tree-mendous jokes!
DEFENSIBLE SPACE
It is important to maintain a defensible space around your house and any outbuildings on your property. This doesn't mean you can't have plants or trees near your house. When creating defensible space, the main focus is the first 30 feet around the structure or the property line, whichever comes first. Once the first 30 feet are correctly mitigated, increasing the mitigated space will continue to decrease the area's risk during a wildfire. It is important to remember that mitigation is NOT about CLEAR-CUTTING!
The goal of a mitigated property is to create proper defensible space, which is the natural and/or landscaped area surrounding a structure that is improved to decrease fire risk. Create a 15-foot separation between the structure and vegetation to prevent fire from spreading to the structure. Exceptions include deciduous vegetation, flowerbeds, and plants with high moisture content. When landscapers submit vegetation plans, it does not show the future growth of trees. Trees should not extend over the roof or under the eaves of your home. Special care must be taken within a "Preservation Area." You can remove dead, diseased, or dying trees and brush. You can also "maintain" vegetation which includes pruning.
Defensible space just doesn't mean trees and vegetation around your house. It also includes cleaning out gutters and cleaning any dead debris off your roof. By maintaining and cleaning your gutters and roof of your house you can drastically decrease the chances of leaving fuels on your house that will contribute to the potential spreading of fire to your house. You should do this often to ensure fuels are kept to a minimum.
Additionally, keeping the space under your deck or patios clean of any fuels, is crucial. By keeping the underside of decks and patios clean, you drastically decrease the chance of embers landing in light flashy fuels and starting a fire in these areas of concern.
Picking the right trees and plants around your house is equally important. Finding plants and trees that have low oil/resin content will help fires from spreading and increase the defense around your house and property. For a list of recommended plants, trees, and shrubs that have low oil/resin content that will be beneficial to have closer to your house, attached below.
